KC & Modern West to play Leland, Iowa…..

According to the following link, article by Mary Pieper, dated January 27, 2009:
http://www.globegazette.com/articles/2009/01/27/news/local/doc497ea10bbaf8b777387553.txt

Kevin Costner and his band, Modern West, will perform in a barn at Jim Ambroson’s residence, located on the west edge of town at 305 W. Broadway, which includes a stage where local bands have played in the past. The doors for the early afternoon performance will open at 11:30am, January 28th. Admission will be a free will offering, all of which will go toward community projects in Leland. Seating was offered to Leland residents first. Ambroson said the very limited space that remains is standing room only.

It all started when a listener called radio station KIOW-FM in nearby Forest City to tell them about a song on the country band’s debut album, “Untold Truths,” titled “Leland, Iowa.” Mark Skaar, programming director and morning on-air personality at the radio station, said the staff naturally wondered why they recorded a song about Leland. After asking around, they found out John Coinman, a member of Modern West who wrote the song, has relatives in the Leland area. “We thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be neat if we could get them to come to Leland?’ ” Skaar said. They looked up the band’s tour schedule online and discovered they had an open date between tonight’s concert in Minneapolis and Thursday’s concert in Omaha, Neb. The radio station contacted both Coinman and the band’s management, and got a response.

Two Kevin Costner Interview links….

Kevin was interviewed by Sandra Sperounes, ahead of KC & MW’s concert for the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce’s Chamber Ball at the Shaw Conference Centre, last night, January 23, 2009. You can find the first portion of the interview at:
http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news/culture/story.html?id=e75b3d2c-8e33-4ebe-8706-f12d8d90877e&k=35452
One significant quote from Kevin: I think if you boil me down, I've always just had a need to either tell a story, write a story or perform. That is what my DNA is about. I've had an unusual life -- I was a commercial fisherman, I drove trucks, I framed houses, so I've worked since I was 16, but I feel like I've seen a lot in my life and I just have a desire to play and to perform. Giving autographs and having my picture taken has not been a satisfying interaction with people. I mean, you think you know me on some level, and fair enough, but my wife said, "If people watch you play, two hours later, they're going to think something very different about you, Kevin." And I said, "Well, I would like that actually."

The second portion of the interview can be found at:
http://communities.canada.com/edmontonjournal/blogs/pluggedin/archive/2009/01/23/quot-music-has-to-walk-between-the-raindrops-of-my-other-life-quot.aspx
Another significant quote from Kevin: "The truth is, I thought of Modern West and the band thought of Kevin Costner. I didn’t want my name to be in front, but the guys all said, ‘Listen, you need to do this right now.’ I’m guilty of caving in, but truly, we’re a real band. We all write and that’s the way I like it. I’m not a solo artist with backup musicians. I’m a person who contributes, listens and decides. I essentially break all the ties." "Music has to walk between the raindrops of my other life and my personal life." "The band would go out and play 150 dates a year. I can maybe take 25 and maybe it'll go up. It's just how people are receiving us and how I feel going forward.”

Thanks to Sandra for a great interview!! Be sure and check it out!!

Molly Maher opens for KC & MW in Minneapolis….

According to the following link:
http://www.twincities.com/entertainment/ci_11527049?source=rss
Ross Raihala sees Kevin Costner and Modern West’s CD, Untold Truths, as “a pleasant, if utterly unremarkable, collection of heartland country rock that's often reminiscent of John Mellencamp.” Local singer/songwriter Molly Maher opens at 7 pm, January 27, 2009, at the Cabooze, 917 Cedar Ave. S., Minneapolis, Minnesota - $25; 612-338-6425.

Brad Richason says, “I decided to check my prejudice, open my mind, and give Costner’s musical endeavor a fair try. Doing so turned out to be a rewarding surprise. While Untold Truths doesn’t forge any new molds, it does successfully capture a solid country-rock sound. As lead singer, Costner comes across a bit like Mark Knopler crossed with Joe Cocker. There’s a nice grit in Costner’s tone that gives texture to a limited but effectively used range. Matching the lyrical content, Costner’s vocals are delivered with a direct, plainspoken sentiment free of embellishment. All in all, Costner comes across with as a confident vocalist singing in service to the song.

Kevin Costner in Turkey to make 60 minute commercial…

According to the following link, with small picture: http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/english/lifestyle/10762384.asp?scr=1
A press conference was held Sunday (01/11/09) at Airport Hotel with Kevin, THY Executive Board Chairman Candan Karlıtekin and THY General Director Temel Kotil. Karlıtekin said it was a very important day for THY and that they had agreed with Costner to make the THY commercial because, “The aim of this commercial is not to highlight the first class cabins, but the focus is on highlighting THY’s business class product in the international arena." Kotil said THY was a shining star and added that these two big brands, Costner and THY, would launch 2009 as the year of aviation. Feeling like a king Costner said it was his second time in Turkey and that he had felt like a king on both occasions. "Working with THY is a very important step in my life," he said. Costner has not flown with THY before, but said, "I have received commercial proposals before. What is important is to work with a company that gives importance to its clients. That is why I have chosen THY." Karlıtekin said, "You can be sure that THY always aims to get returns out of every agreement and every investment." Karlıtekin said the reason they had chosen Kevin Costner was that he was a very good actor, he was very famous and handsome.

In response to a question from members of the press about becoming the face of a Muslim country at a time of war, Costner said, "We were all born in a country and it was not our own choice. Each of us is a citizen of the world. We can act, we can travel and we are accepted. This is important. War has existed since the formation of the world. And our goal must be to end it."

As to his future plans, Costner said, "I have always tried to control and plan things in my life. I do not want to do this anymore. That is why I will try to act according to what comes along. When I was young, I used to think that I had to do everything in the world. My point of view has changed as I have grown older."

As to his support of Obama during the U.S. presidential elections, Costner said, "I do not think any of us want to talk about politics. We are not politicians. We hope that smart people enter politics. Most of the time these people do not win. I hope that the best ones will be very successful in my country. The best man for us won. We need a leader like this in our country and other countries in the next 30 years."

Asked whether he wanted to play the role of Atatürk on film, Costner said that he had received a proposal to do so in the past, but "I think Turkish actors should have this honor rather than a foreign artist."

As to what he had told his relatives about Turkey after his first visit, Costner said, "When I talk about Turkey, I always speak with pride. I tell people that it is beautiful and that the people are beautiful." He said when he had the opportunity to talk to officials in Washington, he would speak to them about his experiences in Turkey and explain why good relations should be established with Turkey. Costner said the continuation of relations with THY was more important than the terms of the agreement. "The reason I came here for a second time was because of the way I was welcomed in my first visit." As to whether U.S. actors came to Turkey to get to know the country better, Costner said, "I started playing music three years ago. Turkey was the first country that invited me and my music to come. I was very surprised, I had never thought of coming. This was a very important step in my life. That is why I have accepted this commercial proposal and I think my other friends have had the same idea."

As to the economic crisis, Costner said, "If it affects one of us, this means it affects all of us. I have never not had concern for others just because I have had a more comfortable life than many."

Following the press conference, THY officials presented Costner with an Elite Plus card, given to THY’s best customers. THY’s 60-second commercial will focus on the company’s services that make passengers feel like a star. The commercial will be shot in an aircraft at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport over two days. Fredrisk Callingaard, director of photography who has worked with the likes of Madonna and Kylie Minogue, will direct the commercial that will be broadcast in 70 countries.

Kevin was sporting a hat which had the famous quote from Atatürk, "Ne mutlu Türküm diyene", meaning, "How happy one is to say they are a Turk." Costner explained his attention-drawing accessory; "I want to make a nice gesture by having a hat made with Atatürk's quote in the US. I feel proud to be welcomed by Turkey.” Costner, who surprised everyone with his hat, stated, "I have read Atatürk's quotes and I thought this was a very special one. I had this hat made in the US because I wanted to show how pleased I am to be here." Costner will be joined by a 15-member crew for the production of the advertising film for THY, which will focus on advertising the company's excellent customer service.

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

With God as our Father, brothers all are we,
Let me walk with my brother, in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now.
With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow,

To take each moment and live each moment in peace, eternally.
Let there be Peace on Earth, and let it begin with me.

New KC interview in Country Weekly Magazine…

See the cover of the January 12th issue, at the following link, on newsstands now:
http://www.countryweekly.com/this_issue

And you can read some of the interview, in a web exclusive, by Pat Gallagher, and see a nice picture of KC, at the following link:
http://www.countryweekly.com/kevin_costner/feature/1400

Excerpt:

CW: “How does singing onstage before live audiences compare to acting on a movie set?”

KC: “Well, it’s a wonderful feeling, and I look forward to it. I’ve always liked that moment. I think something big can happen that you’ll never ever forget. I love that part of it. I think it makes for a really fun night, and the songs people seem to respond to them. I also love the exchange with an audience that has been going to the movies for 20 years.”

Kevin will start off the new year in Turkey…

According to the following link:
http://www.todayszaman.com/tz-web/detaylar.do?load=detay&link=162862&bolum=106

Kevin is going to star in new Turkish Airlines (THY) commercial. He’ll be promoting the first class cabins of three new Boeing 777-300ERs that THY has leased from Indian airline company Jet Airways. Kevin is expected to arrive in Ä°stanbul next week to film the THY commercial which will be made at Ä°stanbul Atatürk Airport. There are eight first class cabins in each of the new planes, which offer passengers complete privacy, suite-style comfort, flat-bed seats over long-distance flights. The first-class seats are 2.1 meters in length, reclining a full 180 degrees. THY introduced its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft at a ceremony at Atatürk Airport last week. The new service offers to take passengers from their home to the airport via limousine, host them in a special lounge at the airport and take the passengers to the plane in mini golf carts. A pillow, a pair of pajamas, a blanket and special black leather slippers are all part of the service for the eight first-class passengers on each plane. (see link for more details, if interested)

I don’t suppose he’ll be modeling the pajamas...lol!!
