Excerpt from article by Chris Miller: Actor Kevin Costner today joins with BP officials to tout plans to finally start using a machine Costner has backed that can rapidly remove 99 percent of oil from water. Costner said it wasn't until this week that BP decided to put his machines into action. Costner still isn't happy it took this long -- since he helped develop the machine a decade ago -- and arrived to help with the Deepwater Horizon disaster less than two weeks after the explosion. Excerpt from article by Sven Berg: David Meikrantz, the scientist who invented the centrifuge and has been a technical advisor for Costner’s companies said, “The oil content in the purified water is about 50 parts per million. That's a little higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's preference of 35 parts per million but it's a lot better than what's floating through the Gulf right now. The problem with Kevin realizing his dreams was there was no big spill.” At the following link:

Excerpt from article by UPI: Pat Smith, chief operating officer for Ocean Therapy, said the company's plant in Nevada will be able to produce 10 machines a month. The largest units can clean as much as 210,000 gallons of oily water a day, the company said, moving the oil to storage tanks. The company said the device removes 99 percent of the oil from water. Costner has been funding research on the equipment for 15 years. At the following link:

Excerpt from article by Kent Hoover: Maybe Costner’s celebrity status helped him stand out from the crowd. Or maybe his years of promoting the technology finally paid off. It turns out that Plaquemines Parish president Billy Nungesser, a local official on the front lines of the battle against the oil spill, is a former oilman who had seen Costner’s device at a trade show in Houston 10 years ago. Nungesser told Costner’s business partner that he knew that the machine would work, and suggested Costner give him a call. At the following link:

Excerpt from article by Melissa Lott: After nearly two months of feeling helpless, I am excited to hear about a technological solution that might help in the situation we have now – where the oil has already escaped and contaminated the surrounding environment. While this technology cannot stop the flow of oil or undo the damage already done to the gulf coast, it might limit future harm as we wait for the solution that will finally stop this oil leak. Excerpt from article by Carl Bagh: Kevin Costner testified before the House of Representatives Science and Technology Committee asking the members to legislate centrifugal-devices stating "We've legislated life preservers. We legislated fire extinguishers, we legislated lifeboats and first aid kits. It seems logical that as long as the oil industry profits from the sea, they have the legal obligation to protect it, except when they find themselves fighting for life and limb."
