dwierbrown - Actor & Author Dwier Brown: Did you know Field of Dreams almost didn’t make it into theaters? The movie studio thought it was too “out there” to be well received and wanted to send it straight to VHS. It was only because Steven Spielberg saw an early screening of the film and lobbied on the movie’s behalf. Even once they agreed to a theatrical release, they decided to do what’s called a “limited release” in only a handful of theaters (across all of America!) with hardly any marketing budget. The odds that this movie would survive (let alone go on to become a classic) were so incredibly low but just like James Earl Jones character promised “Ohhh People will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.” Due to word of mouth and people requesting the film in their area, the movie went on to be released nationwide and was so popular it stayed in theaters for eight months. It was eventually nominated for an academy award for the best film of 1989.
