In the article: 'Emmys 2012: The hits and misses: Critic's Notebook - Anything's possible on Emmy morning' by Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Time Television Critic, she says: "Not only did the first original dramatic miniseries from the History Channel restore our faith in Kevin Costner, who should certainly win the lead actor in a movie or miniseries category in which he and costar Bill Paxton were nominated (sorry, Bill, you were fabulous too) but it also brings a new and unexpected player to the Emmy table. Keep it up, History."

In the article entitled: 'Emmy Awards: Why Sherlock Holmes and various 'girls' make this a schizo but superb nominations list' by Ken Tucker, he says: "But the fact that Hatfields — atypical History Channel with a shocker of a large viewing audience and fine performances by Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton — managed to rack up 16 nominations means this year’s Emmys are much more of a free-for-all. It’s going to make predicting winners tough, which will only add to the fun."
