Kevin Costner and his band, Modern West, will perform in a barn at Jim Ambroson’s residence, located on the west edge of town at 305 W. Broadway, which includes a stage where local bands have played in the past. The doors for the early afternoon performance will open at 11:30am, January 28th. Admission will be a free will offering, all of which will go toward community projects in Leland. Seating was offered to Leland residents first. Ambroson said the very limited space that remains is standing room only.
It all started when a listener called radio station KIOW-FM in nearby Forest City to tell them about a song on the country band’s debut album, “Untold Truths,” titled “Leland, Iowa.” Mark Skaar, programming director and morning on-air personality at the radio station, said the staff naturally wondered why they recorded a song about Leland. After asking around, they found out John Coinman, a member of Modern West who wrote the song, has relatives in the Leland area. “We thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be neat if we could get them to come to Leland?’ ” Skaar said. They looked up the band’s tour schedule online and discovered they had an open date between tonight’s concert in Minneapolis and Thursday’s concert in Omaha, Neb. The radio station contacted both Coinman and the band’s management, and got a response.
